Praying For Your Child to Love God's Word
A couple of weeks ago I posted about how I'm venturing through the book, "Praying The Scriptures For Your Children". I'm just loving it and finding so much I need to be praying for that I'm not - especially for my children.
I love how my oldest is really interested in prayer, the bible, and God's love. I must remember to continue to be praying for him to love God's word more and more everyday.
The next chapter I read through was "Praying For Your Child to Love God's Word".
Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
"A love of Scripture can begin at an early age. We (as mom's) love the snuggle time we get when we "read-aloud" to our children and then tucking them into bed. What better book to read than a colorfully illustrated children's bible. These bedtime rituals are only the beginning. Psalm 119:105 likens God's word-- his laws, his commandments, his promises--to a lamp that sheds light on our path. Perhaps nowhere is this guiding light more necessary (or more welcome!) than when our children have ourgrown our laps, when peer relationships, academic challenges, and other pressure points can generate a cloud of darkness or confusion in their lives."
I really have tears streaming from my eyes. We only have a short amount of time to instill the word in our children. To tell them of God's great love. To teach them right from wrong. And how scary it is when we dont take full advantage of teaching them EVERYDAY. What is more important than this? Absolutely Nothing!
Our prayers are the first line of defense against these clouds. Its obvious that Satan wants to destroy our families and he is always on the lookout for ways to sow seeds of destruction.
The book shares 3 Prayer Principles for Praying For Your Child to Love God's Word:
- Praying for your children to know, love, and use God's word is one of the most effective ways to pray for their spiritual protection.
- When you ask God to hide his word in your child's heart, you are asking him for the blessings of wisdom, protection, and freedom.
- Enlisting the support of a praying friend multiplies the power of your prayers and invites God into your prayer circle.
This chapter shares some prayers we can use to pray for our children:
Heavenly Father.....
"Let _____________________ keep your words and store up your commands so that he will live. Cause him to guard your teachings as the apple of his eye, and let them be written on the tablet of his heart."
"Show __________________that your way is perfect and your word is flawless. Be her sheild as she takes refuge in you."
"Show ____________________that all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness."

Praying For Your Child's Salvation
The title of the first chapter of the book I'm venturing through. "Praying For Your Child's Salvation". We all know we should pray for our children, and for their future, but when was the last time you prayed for their salvation. Such a big thing we all want to instill in our children, but yet something we forget to pray for too often.
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14
- "As parents, we can "join God" in countless ways: We can expose our children to stories of God's faithfulness and protection; we can model the Christian life and introduce them to other believers; we can teach them, encourage them, sing to them, and love them. And move of all, we can pray for them."
- "The sooner we realize that it is not about what we do but about what God does, the sooner we will stop focusing on ourselves and our shortcomings, and begin focusing on God and his power. Likewise, the sooner we quit worrying about doing our part, the sooner we can start rejoicing in the fact that God is doing his part. And the sooner we recognize that God IS at work, the sooner we can jump in and join him."
Those two excerpts from the book really hit home to me. It's time I as a parent stop focusing on what I'm doing wrong, and what I am not doing and begin focusing on God and his power. He is the almighty who can do everything and he is at work in my child's life.
- "When you pray for your children, you join God in the work he is doing in their lives."
I'm finding that a child can be blessed in many ways - with a healthy body, good grades, good family life, outstanding character, friends, and scholarships, but without a relationship with Jesus, all of that means absolutely nothing. We all get so caught up in all of these character traits of our children that we forget the key source and what matters most - God.
What gift can you give your children that lasts forever? Prayer.
You can pray about anything at anytime. This includes your children. Salvation is often the starting point of my prayer. But I need to remember that praying for my child to know and love God takes patience, perseverance, and trust.
"The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
How do you pray for your child?
- "Pray with an attitude of Thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2"
- "Build your faith - memorize verses like 1 John 5:14-15"
- "Be persistent. Luke 18:1"
Prayers You Can Use...
"Heavenly Father....
- "Remove the veil from _________________'s eyes so that he can see the light of the gospel. Shine your light in his heart to give him the light of the knowledge of your glory in the face of Christ."
- "Put people in __________'s life who will gently instruct him/her; and grant their repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth. Cause ____________ to come to his/her senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken her captive to do his will."
- Open ________________'s eyes and turn him from the darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that he may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in Christ."
- "Don't let ________________________be haunted by his/her past. Remind her/him that if anyone is in Christ, he/she is a new creation; the old has gone and the new has come."
Praying for your children can begin as early as just finding out you're pregnant. It's never too early (or too late!) to start praying for them! Won't you join me in praying for our children and their salvation?
*These quotations came straight from the book itself. If you don't have this book, I hope this will help guide you through praying for your children. *
