postheadericon On The Homeschool Front

Jackson is really doing well with Pre-K this year. I cannot believe the school year is half way through. Wow, time flies.

This past week he made his yearly Thankful tree. We traced his hands (which he always loves because it tickles) and cut out the handprints. We made a tree and glued it to cardstock then wrote what he was thankful for on each leaf (handprint). He sure came up with some great ones this year, and a few random ones as well, like Giraffes and Deer. None the less, it was his and what he was thankful for at that moment, and that is what makes it so special.

We are working our way through the Alpha Omega Horizons lessons. I am so grateful for the Horizons curriculum for Pre-K. It really is great for all subjects and definitely prepares the 3, 4, and 5 year old for Kindergarden. I definitely would recommend it to anyone looking for Pre-K curriculum.

Recently, he also learned about "Stop, Drop, & Roll". He had no idea what this was and figured it was just another way for him to be active. :) After explaining what it meant and having him practice, he gets it and it makes me feel so good to know that he understands it, should there ever be an emergency that requires him to do this. This is one of the basic things we need to teach our children but honestly, I totally forgot he should know this and have failed to teach it to him before this lesson. Alpha Omega definitely touches all the bases on concepts preschoolers should know.

Ryan Egan is the Social Media specialist for Alpha Omega. I want to give a little shout out to him and let him know how blessed we are to have this curriculum in our home. We LOVE it and have had such a great experience so far going through it. If you have any questions about Alpha Omega, you can find him on Twitter @homeschoolers or you can find him on Facebook. He will be able to help you with any questions you have about homeschool curriculum, and what Alpha Omega has to offer.

postheadericon Our Homeschooling Week

I love fall! It's my favorite time of year. This week, we've done our work in our Alpha Omega Horizons workbooks and talked about fall and Halloween. We acknowledge that Halloween is meant to be fun and games and nothing scary or gory. We participate in Halloween but just the fun side of it. We have tried on our Halloween costumes and made pumpkins and ghosts. We even made Halloween cookies this week.

I love that we use Alpha Omega. The ideas and content they have in their curriculum is outstanding. My 4 year old is reading and memorizing scripture so much easier than before using them! A great idea Alpha Omega had in their lesson plan book was to write on two separate pieces of construction paper (use two different colors) the memory verse for that week. This week, our memory verse is Psalm 90:12 So, I did just that and cut up the pieces so they were in rectangles (the best I could to make them all match, but it wasn't perfect) :) Once they were cut up, I put them in order of how it should read. We read the verse together a couple of times, then I explained to him that it was his turn to put the words in order and then say it out loud once he had it completed. The video below shows him doing just that and with a little help, he had it in no time! We will be using this method in the future for memorizing scripture. Thanks Alpha Omega!

I also have him doing journal entries. Whether its drawings or writing words, we've started and he loves showing it off!

We've also completed up through lesson 72 in our Horizons workbook. He's loving the worksheets and I'm learning more about his learning style through this. Some of the pictures below show him working hard on his schoolwork. I cannot believe we are almost done with one of the two workbooks he has for this school year. It's flying by! Thanks Alpha Omega for everything!

postheadericon Creation Station: Day One

This week we are learning about Creation. To give this "unit" a snappy name, we're going to title this series of posts, "Creation Station".

I am so excited to expand my 4 year old's thinking about creation. There are lots of ways you could teach about creation, but I wanted to keep it simple.

First, we read this easy to read bible story about creation. I love how easy to read it is and how well my 4 year old comprehended it.

Next, we talked about what God created on Day One. I made posterboard cut outs of numbers for each day of creation. I created and decorated them with what was created on that day to help my "student" understand this concept better.

We then used some of our Alpha Omega Curriculum to talk about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Granted, he doesn't understand the Holy Spirit concept, he now knows that these three make up one...God. We linked that with our family. Our family has one name and we are one big family, but we have different parts of our family. We named out each family member in our immediate family and stated that even though there are four parts, we all are the same family. Just like God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit make up three parts, there is only ONE GOD. I wanted to introduce this concept (even though I knew it wouldnt make sense yet) because later on in the school year, we're going to come back to this. A good way to illustrate this is with an egg. Place the egg in a bowl. Help the student crack the egg. Explain how there are 3 parts to an egg; the shell, egg yolk, and egg white. These three parts make up ONE egg.

Another tool I'm using to help talk about creation is a mini book that I found here. We colored and talked about Day One. All throughout this week, we'll use this book to work our way through the rest of the days of creation. Then he can keep it as a tool to help him remember the days of creation.

We worked through our Horizons workbook and color, cut, and pasted all the things God created for us. He chose where each went on the page and it turned out great! He also colored a picture of "heaven" that was also in our Horizons workbook.

To end this lesson, we watched this video on YouTube about Creation. He loved the pictures and music!

postheadericon Our First Week

We are coming to a close on our first "official" week of school here! And it's been a blast! I'm very excited about what this school year will bring our way. My little man is loving every minute of learning and doing fun activities together. Here is a run down from our week.

1. We re-read the "Charlie & Trike in the Grand Canyon Adventure" and talked about rocks, the flood, Noah, and how we must always obey God, even when others dont believe what we think to be true. God is the ultimate Father and he knows what is best for us.

2. We did Lessons 1-5 in the Alpha Omega Horizons PreK Workbook. I can't say enough good things about this curriculum. I'm excited to use it in the upcoming years as well. Alpha Omega has everything put together so the teacher/homeschool parent doesn't have to do much lesson planning, if at all. It's all laid out to a "T" on lessons, ideas, worksheets, etc. Everything you need for your curriculum. No more searching for multiple books, publishers, and ideas. It's all in one with Horizons.

This week we talked about Dad's and our Heavenly Father - how God created the heavens and the earth. Little man learned about how God is always there for us and how he knows exactly what we need and when.

Our Dad's are special and we love them for many reasons. We listed the reasons why we love our Dad and why we love our ultimate dad, God. For music time, we sang "Daddy, Daddy, We Love You" (to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star!) We also made a "Dad card" to give to our Dad to tell him why we love him so much. Little Man will explain his card to his dad tonight after he is home from work as well as explain that God is also our Dad and loves us so much.

This week's letter is the letter "A". While Little Man is passed this in knowing his letters, numbers, and writing, it still is a great way to review. Instead of skipping over the basic concepts he already knows and jumping to something new, we are going to review until we make it to something new.

3. We also are working on ClickNKids Phonics. I love ClickNKids products and highly suggest them to my readers. Be watching for a review of this product on the 28th of September on my blog.

One of my favorite things from this week's schooling is hearing my son say "Mrs. Mom, you're the best teacher ever!" He had a choice to continue going to his PreK for 3 mornings a week or to stay home and let me teach him and he chose to stay home and LOVES it! Everyday when school is over he wants to do more and can't wait to start tomorrow's lesson! I love that he is really digging in! Go Homeschooling!

Today, I'm linking up with the Bona Fide Showcase - come join in!

postheadericon Review: Alpha Omega Horizons Pre-K Curriculum (Intro)

I'm so excited to be able to review the Alpha Omega Horizons Preschool Curriculum this year! Over the next 6-9 months, I'll be reviewing our preschool year using this curriculum. My son is 4.5 years old and is so excited to actually call himself a preschooler! (Cute!)

I've looked all over the internet and have chatted with friends about curriculum. The one I heard the most was Alpha Omega. So, I did a little more research and got to know Alpha Omega better. Their site is amazing! It's easy to manipulate your way around, and so helpful! Whether you are looking for curriculum for your preschooler or 12th grader, Alpha Omega has you covered. Even if you aren't sure where to start or if you want to go with A.O., their support and team is fantastic. Ryan Egen has been a great help in learning more about Alpha Omega. He is the social media specialist for the company and does great at his job!

Ok- now on to the review...I'm so excited!

I was out running errands on Saturday afternoon and my husband told me the box from Alpha Omega arrived. Right then, I got the butterflies in my stomach. I had been so anxious to get the curriculum and put my hands on it and to just spend time checking it out. So, the day finally arrived and it came while I was out running errands - not only that, but I wasn't going to be home until late. The entire day I kept looking online at the Horizons website while I was out running my errands, looking over what was already at my house. I thought I'd be home in time to dig into it, but I came home and crashed instead.

Fast forward about 12 hours - imagine Christmas morning for a little kid. Thats how I felt when I opened the box.

I went to school to be an Elementary teacher so this kind of thing gets my heart beating. I knew I'd be getting a couple of teachers guide books, a resource book for my little preschooler, but NEVER did I imagine the amount of content to be this great.

One of my favorite parts of the entire set is the hard box that all the books, CD's, and guides fit into. I was expecting to have to buy yet another Rubbermaid bin at Target but it has a great and sturdy box to keep all of the curriculum inside when you aren't using it. For someone who loves organization and keeping things tidy, this is right up my alley!

Below you'll see images of what was included in this set. There were two student books, 2 teachers guides, a music CD, and a HUGE packet of resource pages. The resource pages are finding a new home tonight in a new, clean binder.

Over the next few days, I'm going to be spending all my free time planning. Planning our lessons, our activities, our memory verses, etc. I'm looking forward to an amazing year with my preschooler thanks to Alpha Omega!

I hope you follow me in documenting my experience using this curriculum. It is my hope that it will benefit you and help you decide if this is the route you need to take with your preschooler. Homeschooling is such a rewarding experience for both parent and child and I'm anxious to embrace this year.
