postheadericon Praying For Your Child to Love God's Word

A couple of weeks ago I posted about how I'm venturing through the book, "Praying The Scriptures For Your Children". I'm just loving it and finding so much I need to be praying for that I'm not - especially for my children.

I love how my oldest is really interested in prayer, the bible, and God's love. I must remember to continue to be praying for him to love God's word more and more everyday.

Giving Thanks by megs3782, on Pix-O-Sphere

The next chapter I read through was "Praying For Your Child to Love God's Word".

Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

"A love of Scripture can begin at an early age. We (as mom's) love the snuggle time we get when we "read-aloud" to our children and then tucking them into bed. What better book to read than a colorfully illustrated children's bible. These bedtime rituals are only the beginning. Psalm 119:105 likens God's word-- his laws, his commandments, his promises--to a lamp that sheds light on our path. Perhaps nowhere is this guiding light more necessary (or more welcome!) than when our children have ourgrown our laps, when peer relationships, academic challenges, and other pressure points can generate a cloud of darkness or confusion in their lives."

I really have tears streaming from my eyes. We only have a short amount of time to instill the word in our children. To tell them of God's great love. To teach them right from wrong. And how scary it is when we dont take full advantage of teaching them EVERYDAY. What is more important than this? Absolutely Nothing!

Our prayers are the first line of defense against these clouds. Its obvious that Satan wants to destroy our families and he is always on the lookout for ways to sow seeds of destruction.

The book shares 3 Prayer Principles for Praying For Your Child to Love God's Word:

  1. Praying for your children to know, love, and use God's word is one of the most effective ways to pray for their spiritual protection.
  2. When you ask God to hide his word in your child's heart, you are asking him for the blessings of wisdom, protection, and freedom.
  3. Enlisting the support of a praying friend multiplies the power of your prayers and invites God into your prayer circle.
This chapter shares some prayers we can use to pray for our children:

Heavenly Father.....

"Let _____________________ keep your words and store up your commands so that he will live. Cause him to guard your teachings as the apple of his eye, and let them be written on the tablet of his heart."

"Show __________________that your way is perfect and your word is flawless. Be her sheild as she takes refuge in you."

"Show ____________________that all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness."

Today, I'm linking up with Hip Homeschool Hop (as always for every Tuesday). I love this group!

postheadericon An Exciting Evening

My husband and I were just talking tonight about which homeschool convention we were going to attend this spring or summer. Do we go to the one in Atlanta in July or go to the one in Memphis in March? The one in Memphis is around my birthday so it might make a fun get away for the weekend for us, but who is going to watch our kids? (You can only as your mom so many times right? Before it gets old to her, I'm sure). So, maybe we'll go to the convention in Atlanta - my sister lives there and she could watch the boys while we're "convention-ing". But my heart was really set on the one in Memphis for some reason. We have friends an hour from Memphis that we don't get to see often so it would be a good time to meet up with them, more of our friends are attending this one, and the list goes on and on.

Well, I hop on to check my email tonight and I have a Tweet from @rlwblog congratulating me on winning the Family Pass to a convention of my choice. What? I don't remember entering a giveaway to win these passes. Well, alot happens in a week, and we've been soooo busy, I thought she was just playing a bad joke on me! But wait, Yes! I do remember I entered!

So, after reading the post from Darcy at My 3 Boybarians, and doing a few breathing exercises because I was so excited (you think I'm joking), I immediately called my husband to tell him we won! He was stoked. All that to say, we'll be in Memphis attending the MidSouth Homeschool Convention in March!

Memphis Homeschool Convention

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! to Darcy and Brennan Dean for orchestrating this amazing giveaway. You truly have blessed my night, and our homeschooling "career". This will be our first convention so I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for everyone. Be ready.

postheadericon The Homeschool Mothers Journal - 1

My good friend Sue over at The Homeschool Chick is hosting a meme called The Homeschool Mothers Journal. It's an amazing idea for all you homeschool families out there. How would you answer the same writing prompts she provides? I'm excited to keep record and go back to read my "Homeschool Mothers Journal"

The Homeschool Chick

In my life this week...

This week has been one of those that you can't seem to remember what all was involved because you had so much going on. We have had so much going on this week as a family and then there is the story of my communities online that I'm a part of. It seems like everytime I turn, there is a new door opened - and for the good. Praise the Lord for that!  I'm excited for the things happening with Hip Homeschool Moms, Pixosphere, and 3 In 30....not to mention my own personal blog right here.

One of my goals for this year was to learn more about photography. My husband is an amazing photographer - thou he doesn't do it for a living, he could for sure. So, I'm trying to learn some tips from him as well as from other resources such as I Heart Faces, ClicknMoms, and various blogs. (Got any good books you'd recommend on photography and learning a few new tricks?)

In our homeschool this week...

We are in PreK this year (although I think we should've started with K, but we'll be there in the fall). My son just turned 5 and is reading books already. This is the biggest thing that I have just been shocked with this week by him. He will take a book at the grocery store, Target, or library and read it's entirety. Granted its not a huge Boxcar Children chapter book, I am amazed by his eagerness to read at only 5 (turned 5 yesterday). He is doing so well with addition and subtraction and writing as well. I *heart* homeschooling!

Places we're going & people we're seeing...

We have no field trips scheduled yet for this semester although I'm sure that will change pretty soon. We travel alot as a family, so every trip we take is a learning experience and we're "in the classroom" when we travel - by means of learning wherever we go-

My favorite thing this week was...

The beautiful snow. Nashville usually doesn't have long snows or cold, cold temperatures. However, this winter has been unusual. We were "snowed in" this past week on Friday and had so much fun sledding, ice skating on our driveway, and giving thanks to the one who sent the snow. What an awesome God we serve!

What's working/not working for us...

What's working for us that I just love love love? Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons. Woah, does this book work like magic! I highly recommend it to any parent!

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...

I am on the hunt for the perfect curriculum for Kindergarden. I thought we were going to use Sonlight, but I think I've changed my mind. My sister (who has been homeschooling for over 8 years) has recommended Heart Of Dakota or Five In A Row for Kindergarden. Do any of you have experience with either of these? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

A photo to share...

A photo from this week that makes me smile...

postheadericon Review: Alpha Omega Horizons Pre-K Curriculum (Into Our Spring Semester)

I cannot believe we're already into the Spring semester with PreK. Wow, it goes by way too fast. We are enjoying every minute of it and my little preschooler is learning oh so much!

What do I love about Alpha Omega?

  • That it comes already layed out for the teacher/parent. No need to plan your own lessons and go through the stress that brings. It's already set out for you day by day.
  • The workbook(s) that come with the Horizons package. You can see more details about Horizons here.
  • Everything you need to know to teach your preschooler is included in this curriculum. From bible stories, memory verses, to handwriting, telling time, and math. It's all there!
  • They put the curriculum into preschool terms. Meaning, it's very easy for my preschooler to comprehend and learn from. I've noticed by reviewing other homeschool curriculum and hearing stories about how the preschoolers/student is left feeling frustrated because they aren't making any progress. My son can really see and track his progress that he's made so far this year! It's a great feeling to him as well as to mom. :)
So, what have we worked on this week?

*Telling Time - he is getting so good at looking at a clock and telling us what time it is. We are still on the "o'clock" stage, but he can look at a clock and see that it's 3:00. He also has gotten good at drawing the hands on the clock. Alpha Omega provides wonderful handouts, worksheets, and ideas to help with teaching your student to tell time.

*Handwriting - he has really gotten the hang of this handwriting business. Granted, it definitely has room for improvement, but for a preschooler, I'm shocked at how well he can stay in between the lines, finish the letters in a word, and write even complete sentences when prompted. Again, two thumbs up to Alpha Omega's Horizons!

*Addition & Math Problems: He loves addition and subtraction! We have quite the mathematician on our hands I think. :) We use the dry erase board to help him learn math. It has become quite the hit and he looks forward to writing with the marker - which in return, looks forward to doing math.

Here is an example of the handouts that the Alpha Omega Horizons package includes. It comes in a bound book with tearable pages. I tear the pages out each lesson and hole punch them. Then they go in his "Pre-K binder" where I keep all of his work from the year.

In case you can't tell, I'm a huge fan of homeschool and love all it's bringing to our family! Thank you Alpha Omega for making it even more of a hit in our house!

-We also have been learning this week about Creation Day 5 and the fish that God made on Day 5. Alpha Omega provided lots of activities which included ocean, fish, and sea creatures. How is my preschooler learning to read? We're making our way through "Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons" and he's loving it! This past week he made his way through an entire book for the first time. Such a great feeling to both him and me!

-Make sure to check out Hip Homeschool Mom's new site. A great resource site for all homeschoolers as well as the home of The List (a "hip" way to buy and sell your homeschool curriculum).

Until next time...
