The Homeschool Village: 6/17/10

My favorite book that has really encouraged us and let us know we're doing the right thing by homeschooling is (and this may sound so cliche but its true) the B.I.B.L.E.
We have heard from so many people in our area how the schools in our county aren't great. We didn't think anything of it until recently when our son started getting closer to the age of going to school. Then, we really started to panic - do we send him to private school? What christian school? Do we move and send him to a better public school? All these questions were flooding our head.
Until my husband asked "Why dont we homeschool? You went to college to be a teacher. You'd do great at it and I could help as well when there is something you dont want to cover."
Wow! I had never thought about it. I prayed and prayed, and looked to my favorite book for guidance. God wants us to raise our children in him and to protect their hearts and teach them what is right from wrong. Yes, we could do this if he was going to school somewhere else and not being homeschooled, but we could use the bible, christian curriculum, and train him if we were having school at home and focus more on how to be a Godly steward. I know for a fact the schools here aren't going to teach him that.
Like the scripture says, "Train a child in the he should go and when he is old, he will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6 This is EXACTLY what we want for our children and what better "teachers" for this than their parents?
So, yes, the bible has been my best and favorite book in choosing homeschooling. I'm anxious to read what everyone from The Homeschool Village has written as their favorite book when homeschooling. I'm blessed to be a part of such a wonderful, christian group of ladies.

Absolutely!!! Beautiful post and I know you are going to have a wonderful homeschooling future --- you've got the right book in hand and in heart!
I see now why you were asking about HS books on Twitter yesterday; you're just a newbie HS-er. Have fun as they are young. And you as the mommy, do most of the learning as to what is available to you as a homeschooler. It can be overwhelming at times. Sounds to me like you are off on the right foot by turning to the scriptures.

You and I think a lot alike. When I heard the topic for this week, the Bible was the first book I thought of!
I was a public school teacher for five years before coming home when I got married to my DH. It's amazing how many homeschool moms were teachers or studied to be teachers. I run into them all the time!
