Burned
It was a morning like many others. I was in the middle of my getting ready for the day routine with make-up and hair accessories scattered over the bathroom counter, and a little guy at my feet. My little Curious George was in a very inquisitive mood and kept me busy with “What’s that, Mommy?” as he pointed at and touched nearly everything within reach. I warned him repeatedly not to touch my flat iron because it was very hot and would burn his little hand, yet it was just too tempting for those little fingers. Despite my raised voice and strong warnings against it, my sweet little guy finally gave in to the temptation and placed his hand directly on the hot plate of the iron. No matter how my heart ached for him… No matter how much I wished he had not touched it… No matter how many kisses and hugs I bathed him in… Regardless – he was burned. Even though a small ice pack, lots of extra loving, and a popsicle made him feel better, the burn blisters were still there – evidence of his young rebellion and his resistance to the warnings he was given.
As I rocked my small son and attempted to comfort him, I realized how much that little guy was just like his mother. I couldn’t help but think of all the times I have been that stubborn and resistant to admonitions in my life, so determined my way was best. My insistence and my poor choices grieved those closest to me, but none quite like the way they hurt the heart of my Heavenly Father. His Word is full of warnings, directions, instructions and reprimands to keep us from getting burned. Yet despite all the cautions we are given, so many times we still reach for the heat and find ourselves with blisters. Of course, the Lord is more than capable of healing our hurts and comforting us in the aftermath of a bad choice. He rocks us. He comforts us. He makes it all better. But wouldn’t life be so much simpler if we could just head the warnings first?! Wouldn’t it be better if we didn’t have to feel the pain to learn the lesson?
What flame are you reaching for, despite the warnings against it? Is it worth the blisters and the pain? Or would it be better to choose a different path?
