postheadericon The Homeschool Village: Etiquitte and Manners

Over at The Homeschool Village, the question for this week is:

"Besides leading by example - what practical teaching methods/exercises are you using to teach etiquette and manners to your children?"

We use a variety of methods and exercises to teach etiquette and manners but the one that pops out at me the most is Our Family Rules - see my post here about it.

Every morning we have a routine. We have breakfast, then brush our teeth. Once our breath is fresh, we sing a few songs, say what we are thankful for, say the pledge, go over our Family Rules together and have a morning prayer. This little devotional time with my son and even my youngest son who is starting to participate more in it, is priceless.

Jackson (my four year old) has learned so many great things from these few "family rules" that we have. We are told all the time how polite, well mannered, and sincere he is. What more do parents want to hear? I mean really - aren't we all reaching for a main goal? To raise well behaved, well mannered, socially "there", and confident children?

I strongly believe that having a set of "family rules" will encourage good manners, and etiquitte. Make your family rules together. Make them pretty and easy to read. Make activities out of each rule. Take one rule a day and practice that specific one all day. There really is no right way to learn your family rules and put them into practice. Just one piece of advice, make it fun! Reward for doing that rule well at the end of the day.

I love your family rules. You have inspired me to sit down with my hubby so that we can make a set for our family. I am truly excited about doing something like this!

Love that is is easy, visual, and that you are cheering each other on as you reward for good behavior. We need to remember that we are on the same team...sometimes it is easy to get so caught in the 'correction' side of training instead of the 'inspiration' side of it!
